The Cancer Moonshot initiative under the Obama administration generated considerable global interest and excitement.
The programme invested in high-tech science, big data and technocentric, high-cost research. We think a parallel cancer groundshot is needed to improve the lives of patients with cancer: a strategy that would focus on the implementation of treatments that are already known to work, so that more people would get access to treatment, and incentivising research on affordable and cost-effective interventions. Because cancer patients need better care, not just more technology.
