Inherited metabolic disorder in which there is a decreased or absent activity of the enzyme dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase. This enzyme normally breaks down the molecules thymine and uracil in cells.
This disorder may or may not cause symptoms and signs. However, regardless of any disease manifestation, all individuals with this condition are at risk of toxic reactions to drugs called fluoropyrimidines which are used in cancer treatment.
